"Do Not Murder" (Exodus 20:13)
We set our sermon schedule more than year ahead of this past Sunday. Before Melvin Rowland killed University of Utah student, Lauren McCluskey and before Robert Bowers walked into the Squirrel Hill Synagogue and killed 11 people, God had determined that our congregation would look at Exodus 20:13 on the following Sunday. “Do Not Murder” the Scripture commands, but this is bigger than we often think. Jesus said that even having anger in our heart is akin to murder (Matthew 5:21-22). Pre-meditated murder, negligent homicide, abortion, war, even texting and driving are addressed by Pastor Bryan Catherman in this sermon. But what about God’s instruction to kill others in the Old Testament? What about war? What about glorifying murder and violence in art, games, and movies? And finally, how does the murder of Jesus under the weight of our sin bring about the redemption for all of us murderers?
