No Room for Error

Sometimes the Old Testament feels like the sign in front of the roller coaster that reads, "If you're not this tall, you can't ride this ride."  And sadly, nobody can measure up.  We all miss the mark.  Some by a lot, some by a little--but we all miss the mark.  What can be done?  

The world will tell us that it's just best not to ride the roller coaster. Just forget it.  The world tells us to settle for the tilt-a-whirl.  But the real action at the theme park is the big roller coaster, right. The tilt-a-whirl isn't even close.  But the world says otherwise.  The world might say something like, "all rides are the same" or people who ride the roller coaster are terrible because the tilt-a-whirl is better. Some people will believe such statements because they've never rode the roller coaster.  Others will believe these lies because they couldn't measure up but didn't want to look at the alternative. 

I remember being an angry kid when I wasn't allowed to ride a barf-ride called the Zipper at the state fair.  I was so angry with the carny running the ride.  I was angry with the fair.  I was even angry with the Zipper.  But had I been able, I wouldn't have been angry.  So why was I mad?  

Was it because I didn't measure up?  Was it because I felt rejected?  Sometimes Leviticus feels like that.  Like we can't measure up.  

But God, who the Bible says loves us so much, sent his only son, Jesus Christ, to live a perfect life and measure up for us.  It sounds crazy doesn't it?  But it's true.  

This Sunday we'll be looking at a couple guys in Leviticus who miss the mark. And it doesn't go well for them. (If you've read Leviticus 9-10, you know how much of an understatement that is!) But this should help us see how much more amazing Jesus is and how much we should want to be close to him.
