To the Priests Say. . . (Leviticus 6:8-7:38)

As we continue in our series, "Leviticus" we shift from the rules of the offering to the rules for the priests, specifically Aaron and his sons.  As I read these instructions, I wonder how willing ministers would be to serve as the priests did in the Old Testament. Just yesterday I was not thrilled about cleaning up after a broken sewer system in the church building.  These priests were dealing with the blood of animals, the guts, and ashes.  They had specific instructions about what they should wear while they did specific services.  They were required to raise parts of the offering to celebrate.  I'm sure this was a very messy job.  

There are a few things to see and celebrate here.  

First, Hebrews 4:14-5:10 tells us that Jesus is now the ultimate and everlasting High Priest.  And 1 Timothy 2:5 says, "For there is one God, and there is on mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time."

Second, while we no longer need a priest to stand between us and God on our behalf other than Jesus Christ, we are called to be a nation of priests.  This call does not mean we are a required element to help people make atoning sacrifices and approach God. Instead, we get to serve Jesus by being a priest to the world as an under-priest with Jesus.  And now, our duties are to serve much more like a tour guide to others, pointing the way and assisting as we can.  

And finally, there is something to see about how some are called or set apart to help serve the body (which Pastor Kevin will likely get into more next Sunday).  God made provisions for them so they would not have to go farm or raise animals for food, but instead; they could dedicate their time to serving others at the tent of meeting.  Jesus and Paul make it clear that there should still be provisions in our day, so we can have pastors leading and guiding us with their focus not on raising a living, but serve our souls. 

I want to encourage you to read Leviticus 6:8-7:38 this week in preparation for Sunday. It's a little odd, but I know you an get though it.  And while you're reading, consider asking God to show you something special form this section of Leviticus.
